Lunar New Year Celebrations
Lunar New Year will be celebrated on Saturday 4 February from 4-9pm at Gold Coast Chinatown, Young and Davenport Streets, Southport.
The celebration is a free event featuring an Asian-infused street food market, live music and cultural entertainment, interactive workshops, screening of Kung Fu Panda 3, pop up laneway bar, and a spectacular fireworks display. Check out the Entertainment Schedule and Site Map for all the details.
This is the third year the City has hosted a Lunar New Year celebration – also commonly referred to as Chinese New Year – with last year’s event attracting close to 15,000 visitors.
Bottled water will not be sold at the event, to help reduce the amount of waste generated. Instead, free water refills will be available, so don’t forget to bring your own bottle. Close to 1000 plastic water bottles were diverted from landfill at the 2016 celebrations.
Getting to the event is easy. Ride your bike and receive a free bike maintenance check, or catch the G: Link direct to Southport station. Alternatively, you can park at a number of local City of Gold Coast car parks including:
- Mal Burke car park – corner Hinze and Davenport Streets
- Athol Patterson car park – near Southport Library
- Carey Park car park – Broadwater ParklandsGold Coast Chinatown is an integral part of the revitalisation of Southport as an international CBD for the Gold Coast. It is a place for the Gold Coast to celebrate its diversity through culture, design, people and food.
Events like Lunar New Year will help attract ongoing interest to the Chinatown area from Asian restaurants and retailers, who want to establish themselves permanently in Southport.
