Australia Fair Metro Comes to Life
THE Gold Coast’s most exciting new alfresco dining and retail destination is coming to life – with Australia Fair Metro’s first operators opening their doors as the precinct’s stunning transformation nears completion.
Boasting a fresh, white exterior with landscaped open spaces and linked by a walk-bridge to the iconic Australia Fair Shopping Centre, Metro will bring a greatly enhanced offering to the Gold Coast community, with a range of multicultural dining venues, quality retailers and service providers all in one contemporary new location.
The major redevelopment of the Centre’s west wing facing Young Street forms a key plank of the revitalisation of Gold Coast’s bustling CBD, capitalising on infrastructure upgrades including the G:Link light rail and Broadwater Parklands, and providing a stylish Eastern entrance to Southport’s new world-class Chinatown precinct.
Australia Fair general manager Ramon Otten said Metro was conceived as a centrepiece to the reinvigorated central business, dining and retail hub of the Gold Coast.
“We are thrilled to see Australia Fair Metro coming to life with the opening of further restaurants this week, which offer a diverse array of multicultural fare, ranging from Asian and Middle Eastern to Mexican and more,” Mr Otten said.
“We envisage Australia Fair Metro will become a destination for families, students, business people and visitors alike to mingle and relax as they enjoy delicious food and stylish courtyard dining, in a modern open-air space.
“The opening of Metro is the exciting first phase of our contribution to the bright future of Southport, a dynamic location that is home to a thriving, cosmopolitan community who will drive the area’s evolution as the Gold Coast’s vibrant CBD.”

Southport Upgrades in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games
The Broadwater Parklands will host the marathon, aquatics and triathlon events as part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ (GC2018). The City of Gold Coast are planning a number of infrastructure upgrades along key corridors in Southport to support spectators and workforce walking and cycling to these events. For information on these upgrades and locations that will be effected, please click here.
Chinatown Markets Go Green
As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of waste generated by the Chinatown Street Markets, single use bottled water will no longer be sold. Instead, free water refills will be available to people that bring their own water bottles, and water bubblers for anyone that wants a drink from the water refill station.
This is just one of a number of initiatives designed to reduce the environmental impact of the Markets. Did you know all stallholders are required to use biodegradable packaging and any food not sold at the event is donated to Rosies to be distributed to the Gold Coast’s needy.
So come along, try the selection of delicious cuisines from across Asia and enjoy the multicultural entertainment and live music.
New Australian Mobile App brings Adventure to the Streets of the Gold Coast
A new mobile app for Android and iOS is utilising cutting edge technology to get teens, children, and their parents, active and exploring the areas in which they live.
Now a FREE downloadable app called Story City is using this technology to inspire people to get active. The Story City app uses GPS technology to immerse readers in real-life choose-your-own-adventure stories.
Will you become a wizard in Southport using Australia’s first book of magic? Or perhaps go back in time in Coolangatta to get your grandparents together in the surf-culture of the 50’s? Or do you choose to find the lost rings on the day of your god-mother’s wedding in the Sanctuary Cove resort? The choices that you make take you on a unique journey through the coast, as well as through the story.
This is choose-your-own-adventure storytelling re-imagined for the digital age. Families can do the adventures together, as can tourists, and there are stories suitable for everyone.

Bundall Road Upgrades
To increase the existing and future capacity of the state controlled road network on the Gold Coast the Department of Transport and Main Roads is upgrading Southport-Burleigh Road to create 3 traffic lanes in each direction along Southport-Burleigh Road from North Street in Southport to just south of the intersection of Rudd Street in Broadbeach Waters. This section of Southport-Burleigh Road is known locally as High Street, Ferry Road, Bundall Road and Bermuda Street.
This work is expected to take a few years to complete. Please click here for more information on this project.
